The odd formation appeared over Japan above a train station in the town of Fujisawa just south of Tokyo.
Several people posted pictures of the phenomenon on social media, with some making claims of aliens landing.
UFO blogger Scott C Waring also picked up on the story.
He wrote on ufosightingsdaily.com under the headline Bizarre Spherical "Death Star" Cloud Hovers Over Japan: "This sphere cloud was was seen over Japan last week and its holding together especially well.
"Clouds like this are often made by UFOs that want to hide, yet come especially close so they can scan and observe the humans on the ground.
"The unique thing about clouds made by UFOs is that they can hold together for hours, where most clouds change shape second by second."
Posters on YouTube agreed, with Robert Heeter saying: "It's a cloaking device."
John Roberts added: "May the force be with them."
Another said: "That is how a centre force looks like. Sure it can shoot like a death star."
While one poster said: "I saw the same spherical cloud over Boulder, Colorado a couple years back."
But, others joked about the event.
Matt Levisen said: "A circular cloud! My God the world is over!"
