NASA's Mars Mission: Here are the latest discoveries and updates about the Mars mission

Here are some updates about the amazing discoveries that NASA made on its Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Mission this December, as well as issues faced by the Mars Curiosity rover.

Images of Valles Marineris, the Martian valley spread over 4,000 km that was discovered by Mariner 9 Mars orbiter in 1971-72, were clicked this month. The abrupt walls of Valles Mariners end up generating giant landslides at times, which made an underlying bedrock observable.

Pictures of a colourful bedrock were taken from the north wall of a deep gorge named Ganges Chasma, which is present on the eastern end of the Valles Marineris, with the help of NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The images revealed a lot of textures and different geologic units.

Various features, similar to those on Earth, can be found on Mars, such as volcanoes, glaciers, cliffs and river valleys, but a unique landscape of dry ice, which has never been seen before was observed on Mars' South Pole. It was found that the polar ice was made from dry ice, which is not naturally found on Earth.

This dry ice landscape consisted of circular pits which that were found to get bigger every Martian year by a few metres. New layer of dry ice was being added to this landscape because of the CO2 present in the atmosphere or due to snowfall. This leads to temperatures as less as -130 degrees Celsius (-200 F), which is believed to be the coldest Mars can get, NASA published.

Various Martian impact craters were filled with ice in the past. Impact craters are formed due to the hypervelocity of a smaller celestial object, such as a meteor. The ice on the Red Planet fills them up. Polygonal shapes are found covering the matter present in the crater. The crack formulation takes place due to expansion and contraction of the ice present in the ground. A bright white outline is formed because of the seasonal frost, which is clearly visible in this image taken during spring.

Also, NASA's Curiosity Mars Rover had faced a glitch in its motor, which aided its drilling equipment to move. Its arm is not being used by the mission scientists until the issue gets resolved. Curiosity Mars rover is present at the lower Mount Sharp of Mars from where it was collecting the sample by drilling.

"We are in the process of defining a set of diagnostic tests to carefully assess the drill feed mechanism. We are using our test rover here on Earth to try out these tests before we run them on Mars," Steven Lee, Curiosity deputy project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the US, said, Indian Express reported.

"To be cautious, until we run the tests on Curiosity, we want to restrict any dynamic changes that could affect the diagnosis. That means not moving the arm and not driving, which could shake it," Lee added.

Quasicrystal Found In Russian Meteorite Is Only The Third To Be Discovered In Nature

Until just a few years back, the existence of natural quasicrystals - unique materials that are neither crystalline nor amorphous - was considered an impossibility. Over the past five years, however, scientists have discovered two of these in nature, both from a meteorite discovered in the Khatyrka region of northeast Russia in 2011.

Another quasicrystal has now been discovered by scientists analyzing this meteorite. However, unlike the first two - which were created in a lab before they were discovered in nature - this one has no artificial analogues.

"It's the first example of a natural quasicrystal whose chemistry has never been synthesized previously," Paul Steinhardt, a physicist at Princeton University, who was part of the team that made the discovery, told ResearchGate. "Nature made it before humans did."

Before the existence of quasicrystals was theorized in the 1980s, we knew of only two kinds of solids - crystalline and amorphous. Crystals consist of atoms arranged in an ordered lattice that repeats itself, while amorphous solids are completely chaotic.

"Quasiperiodic crystals are still crystals - they have nothing to do with amorphous materials," Israeli chemist Daniel Shechtman, who won the Nobel Prize in 2011 for the discovery of quasicrystals in a synthetic material, told Motherboard. "Amorphous materials are non-ordered (like glass), quasicrystals are crystals, but the atomic relation within them is different than periodic crystals. It is perfectly ordered, but not periodic."

As a result of this unique property, quasicrystals contain more complex forms of symmetry. While crystals can exhibit only two, three, four, or six-fold rotational symmetry, quasicrystals can exhibit seemingly "impossible" five-fold symmetry in two dimensions and icosahedral symmetry in three dimensions.

The newly-discovered quasicrystal also exhibits a five-fold rotational symmetry associated with an icosahedron - a geometric structure with 20 faces.

"The Khatyrka meteorite definitely contains parts that date back more than 4.5 billion years to the beginning of the solar system. We think one of the three quasicrystals we have found formed at the same time," Steinhardt told ResearchGate. "But the new one being reported here is probably made as a result of a high velocity collision that our meteorite encountered 300 million years ago while it was still in space. We estimate it landed on the Earth less than 20,000 years ago."

Although the discovery does provide invaluable insights into the nature of these bizarre forms of matter, bringing us closer to synthesizing more of them in labs, the practical applications of quasicrystals are still not entirely clear.

"None of the ones discovered so far really have any use other than 'wow, this is cool,'" Paul Asimow, a professor of geology and geochemistry at the California Institute of Technology, told New Scientist. "But it's not out of the question that someone will find a really good use for quasicrystals one of these days."

A video uploaded on Dec. 5 by Streetcap1 shows an unidentified flying object or UFO traveling alongside the International Space Station (ISS). The footage of this alleged alien spacecraft was taken from a live web feed from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

As seen on the video, a golden object flashes bright red and blue lights before disappearing suddenly. This "alien spacecraft" appears to be traveling at the same speed as the ISS.

"This is an unidentified flying object near the ISS. It eventually just disappears. You may notice some very fast red flashes near it. I have uploaded it just as it was broadcast so many people must have seen it, too," captioned the YouTuber.

According to alien conspiracy theorists, this object is there to investigate the thoughts of astronauts aboard the ISS. Meanwhile, others speculated it to be a Saturn Ringmaker, which is a theory that aliens formed Saturn's rings. The UFO has caught the attention of UFO blogger Scott C Waring of UFO Sightings Daily. In Waring's post, he wrote:

"Wow! This golden cigar UFO was seen on live space station cam yesterday. It was caught by the watchful eye of Streetcap1 of YouTube. As proof to this being a real object, the UFO is slightly touching the light...lighting up one end of the UFO (above photo).

That is proof that this is a solid object and its shadows are due to the light from the sun. Awesome catch, and I wonder what aliens are doing up there...investigating the thoughts of the astronauts, or were they invited guests that came aboard the ISS?"

In November, alien enthusiasts believed that another video of the ISS showed an alien spacecraft. However, a few seconds after the UFO appeared, the ISS video feed got cut. Apparently, this indicates that the object captured was indeed an alien spaceship. Source: australianetworknews

One resident paranormal 'expert', John Mooner, recently caught and captured alien activity.

John Mooner explains that he is the "chief photographer for world UFO photos." He sent his sightings since June to the media.

At one point, he actually managed to catch eight UFOs above Newton Abbot.

"Newton Abbot is definitely a hotspot for UFO activity. I truly wish that the British government would tell the truth about alien visitation in the UK.," he said.

The most recent of his photographs show a 'flying saucer' with an alien holding a 'device'. He came out early in the morning, when it was absolutely cold. He could see the stars, as the lamp posts had switched off. He gazed up at the stars and began to think about aliens, when it happened.

He said: "I was only outside for ten minutes when I was just about to go back inside due to the cold conditions, but as I turned I spotted a strange glow that caught my attention. I immediately zoomed in with my Nikon P900 camera and I could see the glowing was coming from the outer ring of a flying saucer. The outer ring of the flying saucer looked almost like glass and the light that was being emitted reminded me of light from a cathode light.

"The middle of the saucer was dimly lit and looked dirty. I took a photograph and watched as the flying saucer moved off into the distance and out of sight. After studying the photograph I spotted what appeared to be an alien being in the bottom left part of the flying saucer. The alien being appears to be holding some type of device. I believe that the device could be some type of scope or camera. Fascinating."

That does seem to be a mindboggling experience. However, Mooner seems to have seen a number of UFOs, so he is quite an alien expert, and has confirmed their existence.

According to Nature World News, the YouTube uploader said, "We had a fleet of these unknown lights that were appearing in multiple cities across the country of Turkey, causing mass panic for many people."

The mysterious objects resembled the famous Phoenix Lights incident that happened in 1997. Consequently, Denver and Texas also found similar UFO sightings earlier. However, some people believe that US defense system owned these aircrafts and they had a secret mission underway.
